U.S. Trade Judge Rules Apple Infringed on Qualcomm Patent, Recommends Ban on Some iPhone Models [Updated]

Apple and Qualcomm are currently tied up in court as Qualcomm tries to nail down patent infringements made by Apple.

Update: Apple did not run afoul of the same judge in the second ruling handed down today. The same judge ruled that Apple did not infringe upon a Qualcomm patent related to power management. This is the second of three patents being seen in this case. Unfortunately for Apple, this second ruling does not impact the first at all.

The original article continues below.

Of course, the proceedings have not necessarily been civil, as the two companies go back-and-forth trying to win the day. And while Apple has seen some movement in its direction in the past, the latest ruling from a trade judge in the United States is decidedly in Qualcomm’s favor. As was first reported on Tuesday by Bloomberg, International Trade Commission Judge MaryJoan McNamara has ruled against Apple, saying that the company has indeed infringed upon a patent held by Qualcomm.

The judge ruled in favor of Qualcomm as it relates to just one of the three patents that are put against the ITC court. At the time of publication, Apple has yet to comment on the ruling, but it’s likely the company will soon enough. What’s more, while Judge MaryJoan McNamara has recommended a sales ban on certain iPhone models in the United States, it is likely that the decision will have to be reviewed before any ban is actually set against Apple.

It is also likely that the decision will only impact older iPhone models, and won’t have any connection to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or the iPhone XR.

This is not the first time that this particular court battle has resulted in this outcome. In China, Apple was hit with a sales ban. However, that particular patent infringement case dealt with software and not hardware. As a result, Apple updated iOS to address the issue and circumvent any sales ban in that region.

Meanwhile, in Germany, Apple was hit with a sales ban that definitely went into effect. However, Apple is going to sell iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 models with a Qualcomm chip inside to bypass that sales ban in that country.

Whether or not this sales ban in the U.S. actually sticks, or if Apple makes changes to address it ahead of time, remains to be seen.
Our Take

This is a fight that is not going to end anytime soon, even if both companies would probably like it to. Still, it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out in the future, and what that means for the relationship between Apple and Qualcomm when the dust settles.
We Want To Hear From You

Do you think Apple and Qualcomm will come to amicable terms when this all ends? Or will the two no longer be working together in the future?

Apple Plans to Sell Bundles of Cable TV Channels Through New Streaming Service

Apple Plans to Sell Bundles of Cable TV Channels Through New Streaming Service
While Apple's new TV streaming service will include its own original content, Apple will also be offering customers access to video streaming subscriptions from third-party services, such as HBO and Showtime.

Part of this effort could potentially include bundles of channels from various content providers, according to new reports from Recode and The Information.

Apple has negotiated rights to bundle streaming services together as part of its deals with media firms, which will allow it to offer packages of channels like HBO, Showtime, and Starz at a price that's lower than what each service would cost on a standalone basis. From Recode:

That wholesale/retail relationship also means Apple, not the streamers, can set the price for the stuff it sells. Apple isn't likely to sell, say, HBO for less than HBO sells itself on rival platforms like Roku. But it definitely plans to sell bundles of pay tv channels at a discount, just like pay TV operators have always done.

It's not entirely clear when Apple plans to offer bundles like these, but providing discounted access to a group of channels would provide Apple with an edge over Amazon. Amazon, as The Information points out, allows customers to sign up for streaming services like Showtime through their Amazon account, but customers must pay full price.

According to Recode, Apple's service isn't going to be a major Netflix or Hulu competitor because the focus is going to be on selling streaming video subscriptions from other companies and taking a cut of the transaction. Apple is working on original content, but its own shows and movies "should be considered very expensive giveaways, not the core product."

Apple is offering its content partners a revenue share that's similar to Amazon, which keeps 30 to 50 percent of the subscription fee. Apple, however, won't be offering access to as much data as Amazon provides. Still, The Information says publishers find bundling "appealing," and Apple has been touting its huge subscriber base to score deals. Apple's subscription TV content will be made available through its existing TV app which is available on the Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.

There's no word on which channels Apple will include in bundles, but Apple has signed deals with 15 streaming channels for separate subscriptions, including digital only services like Cheddar and Tastemade and TV channels like Showtime and Starz. Apple has not yet inked a deal with HBO.

Apple is going to introduce its streaming service at its upcoming March 25 event, and the service is expected to launch in the United States later in the spring before expanding to additional countries.

Apple is also unveiling an Apple News subscription service at the event, and rumors have suggested that the TV and news services could be bundled with Apple Music as part of one subscription for Apple users. Apple is also going to announce an Apple credit card provided by Goldman Sachs. Also Read:How to Clone Yourself and Other Objects in a Picture Without Photoshop?

Apple Stops Signing iOS 12.1.1 Beta 3

While Apple stopped signing iOS 12.1.2 quite a few weeks back, it continued signing iOS 12.1.1 beta 3 thereby allowing users running iOS 12.1.3 – iOS 12.1.4 to downgrade back to it and jailbreak their iPhone or iPad. Sadly, that option is no longer available now as Apple has stopped signing iOS 12.1.1 beta 3.

Some users are reporting that they were still able to downgrade their iPhone to iOS 12.1.1 beta 3 so you might want to try your luck. The chances of success are pretty slim though.

Now that Apple has stopped signing iOS 12.1.1 beta 3, it means that if you did not already downgrade your iPhone to iOS 12.1.1 beta 3 or if it is not already running iOS 12.1.1 – iOS 12.1.2, there’s no way you can jailbreak it using Unc0ver. If for some reason you could not downgrade your iPhone to iOS 12.1.1 beta 3, you are out of luck now.

Your only option now is to stick to iOS 12.1.4 on your iPhone and hope that an exploit is discovered sooner than later for it that paves the way for a potential jailbreak. But even then, that is unlikely to happen anytime soon so be prepared for a long wait.

If your iPhone is running any iOS 12 version lower than iOS 12.1.3 and you are interested in the jailbreaking scene, you should immediately save the SHSH blobs as that would allow you to manually downgrade back to that iOS version later on.Also Read:What to Do If Your Android Phone won’t Turn On or Charge?

Common Solutions to Fix iTunes Error 3600

The following solutions can help you out of iTunes error 3600 when updating, upgrading, downgrading or restoring your iPhone over iTunes.
1. Ensure Your Apple Lightning Cable is Plugged Directly into Your Computer

Since iTunes error 3600 (iPhone error 3600) can be caused by interruptions from USB connection cable, it’s better you plug your iOS device directly into your computer’s USB port. Avoid using a third-party connection port, plugging into an attached keyboard or USB hub.

If you’ve rightly connected your iPhone to your PC using the right connection cable and directly connected to the computer USB port, then you can try to restore, update or downgrade your iOS device again.
2. Restart Your Computer and iPhone/iPad/iPod touch

If you’re in a rush to update, restore, upgrade or downgrade your device’s iOS, then you may not know that the first method we shared has solved your problem. It could also be that you’ve not restarted your device for a long while. So, restart your computer and iOS device and try restoring, updating, upgrading or restoring your device again.
3. Turn off Windows Defender Firewall

There are times when Windows Defender Firewall software can restrict iTunes when restoring, updating and restoring an iPhone/iPad or iPod touch. You can temporarily turn off your computer’s Firewall until you’ve complete your iPhone update, restore or downgrade.

Step 1: Click on the Windows Start button, and select “Settings > Update & Settings > Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.

Step 2: Choose a network profile and select “Windows Defender Firewall”.

Step 3: Switch the settings to Off.
We’ve extensively discussed ways to fix iTunes error 3600 on a Mac and Windows PC.
